The
Safety and Regulatory Compliance Department attended the monthly STL ATC/airport
user meeting on Tuesday April 1Oth". There was an issue brought up to
all the airlines that we see as a possible safety issue. When parallel
approaches are in use and you are turning on to the final approach course,
a "tight" tolerance is highly recommended. Understanding that
most S.O.P.'s give a one‑half dot tolerance, one-half dot at 16
miles is approximately 1200 feet. That distance is at the edge of ATC's
transgression zone. An entry into the transgression zone would require ATC
to request the aircraft break off the approach. ATC does admit that on
occasion they will give a late turn on for whatever reason. If you
encounter this, it is very important to work your way back to the
localizer ASAP.
If you have any question about this
issue or if you have an issue to discuss with ATC, please give me a call.
