FLIGHT OPERATIONS SAFETY BULLETIN
July 6, 2000
In the last month, we have seen an increase in wingtip "strikes"
while being parked or being marshaled out. From a sagety perspective, I wanted
to make sure that everyone recognizes any situation where the wigtips are
getting close to 3 feet of each other. If you find yourself in this situation,
then a wing walker should be present. Keep in mind that a wingtip should never
get within 3 feet of an obstruction even with a wing walkeer. Section 6 of the
G.O.M. requires station personnel to be stationed at the wingtip if clearances
become small. The second and final reference that I would point out is G.O.M.
section 6; paragraph 6.7 D, the last sentence. This guidance talks about
stopping the aircraft if any doubt exist regarding the safe outcome of the
maneuver, then the aircraft should be stopped. If anyone has any questions or
comments regarding this subject, please don't hesitate to call or stop by.
